HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION
• IDLH:
15
mg[Cr(VI)]/m3
• IARC:
Group
1, human carcinogen, sufficient human evidence
• NTP:
Known
human carcinogen
•
OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant as chromic acid and chromates (CrO3); as zinc
compounds.
•
Dust causes irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Breathing high
levels of chromium(VI) compounds can cause irritation to the nose, such as
runny nose, nosebleeds, and ulcers and holes in the nasal septum. Ingesting
large amounts of chromium(VI) compounds can cause stomach upsets and ulcers,
convulsions, kidney and liver damage, and even death. Skin contact with certain
chromium(VI) compounds can cause skin ulcers. Some people are extremely
sensitive to chromium(VI). Carcinogenic to humans. See also Zinc.
Exposure Limits:
•
ACGIH TLV: 0.05 mg[Cr]/m3 TWA, confirmed human carcinogen
•
OSHA PEL: 0.1 mg[CrO3]/m3 ceiling limit
•
NIOSH REL: 0.001mg[CrO3]/m3 TWA, potential carcinogen, reduce exposure to
lowest feasible level.
•
DFG TRK: 0.05 mg[Cr]/m3; 20
μ
g/L [Cr] in urine at end of shift [also
applicable for exposure to welding fumes], animal carcinogen, suspected human
carcinogen.
Respirator:
At
any concentrations above the NIOSH REL, or where there is no REL, at any
detectable concentration:
SCBAF:PD,PP
(any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full facepiece and is
operated in a pressure-demand or other positivepressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA
(any suppliedair respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a
pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode in combination with an
auxiliary self-contained breathing apparatus operated in a pressure-demand or
other positive-pressure mode).
Escape:
GMFOV[any
airpurifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or
back-mounted organic vapor canister] SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, selfcontained
breathing apparatus).
Reactivity:
An
oxidizer. Contact with reducing agents, acids, acetic anhydride, or combustible
materials may cause fire and explosions.
FIRE INFORMATION:
If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify
downstream users of potentially contaminated water.

FIRST AID:
Eye:
If this chemical contacts
the eyes, immediately wash them with large amounts of water, occasionally
lifting the lower and upper lids. Get medical attention immediately. Contact
lenses should not be worn when working with this chemical.
Skin:
If this chemical contacts the skin,
immediately wash the contaminated skin with soap and water. If this chemical
penetrates the clothing, immediately remove clothing, wash the skin with soap
and water, and get medical attention promptly.
Inhalation:
If a person breathes large amounts of this
chemical, move exposed person to fresh air at once. If breathing has stopped,
perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Keep the affected person warm and at
rest. Get medical attention as soon as possible.
Ingested:
If this chemical has been swallowed, get
medical attention immediately.
