IDENTIFICATION:

CAS: 108-46-3

DOT ID: UN2876

Hazard Class or Division: 6.1 (POISONOUS/TOXIC MATERIALS)

ERG Guide: 153

Formula: C6H6O2

RTECS No: VG9625000

Properties: Combustible liquid. Hygroscopic white needles, plates, crystals, flakes, or powder; turns pink on exposure to air or light, or contact with iron. Faint characteristic odor. Water soluble.

Uses: In resins, adhesives.

HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION

IARC: Group 3, not classifiable as to carcinogenicity to humans; inadequate animal and human evidence.

• OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant

• Liquid or vapor irritates the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. May affect the blood; methemoglobin may be formed; the effects may be delayed. Long term exposure can cause skin and blood disorders; heart, liver and kidney damage. This chemical produces goiters in rats. May effect the nervous system. Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization.

Exposure Limits:

• ACGIH TLV: 10 ppm TWA; 20 ppm STEL, not classifiable as a human carcinogen

• OSHA PEL: None

• NIOSH REL: 10 ppm/45 mg/m3 TWA; 20 ppm/90 mg/m3 STEL

Respirator: At any concentrations above the NIOSH REL, or where there is no REL, at any detectable concentration: SCBAF:PD,PP (any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positivepressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA (any suppliedair respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode in combination with an auxiliary self-contained breathing apparatus operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode).

Escape: GMFOV [any airpurifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted organic vapor canister] SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, selfcontained breathing apparatus).

Reactivity: Hygroscopic; absorbs moisture from air. Strong oxidizers, including nitric acid may cause fire and explosion. Incompatible with acetanilide, albumin, alkalis, antipyrine, camphor, ferric salts, menthol, spirit nitrous ether, acids, and bases. May accumulate static electrical charges, and may cause ignition of its finely dispersed particles.

FIRE INFORMATION

Combustible liquid; but difficult to ignite. If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream users of potentially contaminated water.

Hazard Classifications:

Health Hazard (Blue) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2

Flammability (Red) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .   1

Reactivity (Yellow) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0

Flash Point: 261°F (127°C)

Flammable Limits in Air: LEL 1.4% at 392°F (200°C); UEL N/A

Autoignition Temperature: 1,126°F (608°C)

FIRST AID: Move victim to fresh air; call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves.

ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS

Clean Water Act: Section 311 Hazardous Substances/RQ (same as CERCLA).

• EPA Hazardous Waste Number (RCRA No.): U201.

• RCRA Section 261 Hazardous Constituents

• EPCRA Section 304: Reportable Quantity (RQ): CERCLA, 5000 lb (2270 kg).

• California LOL: MN

• WHMIS, Ingredients Disclosure List (Canada): 1%
