MALEIC ANHYDRIDE

SYNONYMS: ANHIDRIDO MALEICO (Spanish); ANHYDRIDE MALEIQUE (French); BM 10; cis- BUTENEDIOIC ANHYDRIDE; DIHYDRO-2,5- DIOXOFURAN; 25-DIHYDROFURAN-2,5-DIONE; EEC No. 607-096-00-9; EINECS No. 203-571-6; 25- FURANDIONE; 25-FURANEDIONE; MALEIC ACID ANHYDRIDE; MALEINSAEUREANHYDRID (German); TOXILIC ANHYDRIDE; STCC 4941161

IDENTIFICATION:

CAS: 108-31-6

DOT ID: UN2215

Hazard Class or Division: 8 (CORROSIVE MATERIAL)

ERG Guide: 156

Formula: C4H2O3

RTECS No: ON3675000

Properties: Combustible liquid or solid (solid difficult to ignite). Transported as a hot liquid. Colorless liquid, or white solid as needles, crystals, lumps or pellets, Irritating, acrid, choking odor. Mixes with water

forming a strong acid.

Uses: Making lube oil additives, preservative for cutting oils; in corrosion inhibitors.

HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION

• IDLH: 10 mg/m3

• Odor threshold: 1.02–1.31 mg/m3 [inadequate warning properties]

• OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant

• The substance irritates severely the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Inhalation may cause asthmatic reactions; the effects may be delayed (persons showing asthma symptoms due to exposure should be warned to avoid all further contact with this chemical). Repeated or prolonged skin contact may cause dermatitis. Chronic inhalation exposure may cause asthma.

Exposure Limits:

• ACGIH TLV: 0.1 ppm TWA

• OSHA PEL/NIOSH REL: 1 mg/m3/0.25 ppm TWA

• DFG MAK: 0.1 ppm/0.41mg/m3

Respirator: 10 mg/m3: SA:CF (any supplied-air respirator operated in a continuous-flow mode) SCBAF (any self-contained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece) SAF (any supplied-air respirator with a full facepiece). Emergency or Planned Entry into Unknown Concentrations or IDLH Conditions SCBAF:PD,PP (any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressuredemand or other positive-pressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA (any supplied-air respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressuredemand or other positive-pressure mode in combination with an auxiliary self-contained breathing apparatus operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode).

Escape: GMFOVHiE [any air-purifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted canister having a high efficiency particulate filter] or SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, self-contained breathing apparatus). Note: Substance causes eye irritation or damage; eye protection needed.

Reactivity: Reacts (hydrolyses) slowly with cold water to form maleic acid. Contact with strong oxidizers may cause fire and explosions. Contact with amines or alkali metals (even in low concentrations of 200 ppm) cause polymerization if temperature is > 150°F/66°C. Attacks some plastics, rubber, and coatings. Corrosive to metals except in the presence of water.

FIRE INFORMATION: If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream users of potentially contaminated water.

Hazard Classifications:

Health Hazard (Blue) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3

Flammability (Red) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .   1

Reactivity (Yellow) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1

Flash Point: 218°F (103°C)

Flammable Limits in Air: LEL 1.4%; UEL 7.1%

Autoignition Temperature: 878°F (470°C)

FIRST AID: Move victim to fresh air. Call emergency  medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with material, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves.
