Hazard Class or Division: 4.1 (FLAMMABLE SOLID) (UN1869); 4.3 (DANGEROUS WHEN WET) (UN1418; UN2950); FORBIDDEN (dross, wet or hot)

ERG Guide: 138

Formula: Mg

RTECS No: OM2100000

Properties: Flammable solid. Silvery. Odorless. Sinks in water; not soluble.

Uses: Many industrial uses including die-cast parts, production of other metals and alloys, including removing sulfur from iron in steel making; in gasoline additives; protection of cathodes in electroplating; making batteries and optical mirrors.

HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION

• Dust or fume may cause metal fume fever. Repeated exposure may cause chemical to be collected in the body and cause upset stomach.

Respirator: as magnesium oxide 150 mg/m3: DMFu (any dust, mist and fume respirator) SA (any supplied-air respirator). 375 mg/m3: SA:CF (any supplied-air respirator operated in a continuous-flow mode) PAPRDMFu (any powered, air-purifying respirator with a dust, mist, and fume filter). 750 mg/m3: HiEF (any air-purifying, full-facepiece respirator with a high-efficiency particulate filter) PAPRHiE (any powered, air-purifying respirator with a high-efficiency particulate filter) SCBAF (any selfcontained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece) SAF (any supplied-air respirator with a full facepiece). Emergency or Planned Entry into Unknown Concentrations or IDLH Conditions SCBAF:PD,PP (any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA (any supplied-air respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positivepressure mode in combination with an auxiliary selfcontained breathing apparatus operated in a pressuredemand or other positive-pressure mode).

Escape: HiEF (any air-purifying, full-facepiece respirator with a high-efficiency particulate filter) SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, self-contained breathing apparatus).

Reactivity: Strong reducing agent; violent reaction with oxidizers, strong acids, carbon tetrachloride, carbonates, chloroform, halogens, metal oxides, phosphates, silver nitrate, sodium peroxide, sulfates, trichloroethylene, and many other substances. In finely divided form, reacts with water and acids to release flammablehydrogen gas.

FIRE INFORMATION: If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream users of potentially contaminated water.

Hazard Classifications:

Health Hazard (Blue) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0

Flammability (Red) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .   1

Reactivity (Yellow) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1

Special situations . . . . . . . . . . . WATER

Flash Point: Flammable when in the form of turnings or powder.

Autoignition Temperature: 883°F (473°C)

FIRST AID: Move victim to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, wipe from skin immediately; flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Keep victim warm and quiet. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves.
