IDENTIFICATION:

CAS: 78-83-1

DOT ID: UN1212

Hazard Class or Division: 3 (FLAMMABLE LIQUID)

ERG Guide: 129

Formula: C4H10O

RTECS No: NP9625000

Properties: Flammable, colorless, oily liquid. Sweet, musty odor. Slightly soluble in water. Vapor is heavier than air; will collect in low areas.

Uses: Used in solders, solder fluxes, hydraulic fluids; solvent for cleaning metals, surface coatings, paint, varnish removers, and adhesives.

HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION

• IDLH: 1600 ppm/4928 mg/m3

• Odor threshold: recognition 2.03 – confirmation 123 mg/m3

• OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant

• Vapor is a respiratory tract irritant; high concentrations causes smarting of the eyes and respiratory system and may cause drowsiness,  dizziness, headache. The effect is temporary. Liquid causes severe eye irritation, defatting of the skin, skin cracking.

Exposure Limits:

• ACGIH TLV: 50 ppm TWA

• OSHA PEL: 100 ppm/300 mg/m3 TWA

• NIOSH REL: 50 ppm/150 mg/m3 TWA

• DFG MAK: 100 ppm/310 mg/m3

Respirator: 500 ppm: CCROV [any chemical cartridge without organic vapor cartridge(s)] SA (any supplied-air respirator). 1,250 ppm: SA:CF (any supplied-air respirator operated in a  continuous-flow mode) PAPROV [any powered, air-purifying respirator with organic vapor cartridge(s)]. 1,600 ppm: CCRFOV [any chemical cartridge respirator with a full facepiece and organic vapor cartridge(s)] GMFOV [any air-purifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted acid gas canister] PAPRTOV [any powered, air-purifying respirator with a tight-fitting facepiece and organic vapor cartridge(s)] SCBAF (any self-contained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece) SAF (any supplied-air respirator with a full facepiece). Emergency or Planned Entry into Unknown Concentrations or IDLH Conditions SCBAF:PD,PP (any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA (any supplied-air respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positivepressure mode in combination with an auxiliary selfcontained breathing apparatus operated in a pressuredemand or other positive- pressure mode).

Escape: GMFOV [any air-purifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted organic vapor canister] SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, self-contained breathing apparatus). Note: Substance reported to cause eye irritation or damage; may require eye protection.

Reactivity: Forms explosive mixture with air. Incompatible with strong acids, mineral acids, strong oxidizers, caustics, aliphatic amines, isocyanates, alkali metals, and alkaline earth. Attacks some  plastics, rubber, and coatings. May react with aluminum at high temperatures.

FIRE INFORMATION: Vapor may travel ling distances to sources of ignition and flash back. Vapor in confined areas or containers may explode in fire. If material or contaminated runoff enters  waterways, notify downstream users of potentially contaminated water.

Hazard Classifications:

Health Hazard (Blue) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1

Flammability (Red) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  3

Reactivity (Yellow) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0

Flash Point: 82°F (28°C)

Flammable Limits in Air: LEL at (123°F; 51°C) 1.7%; UEL at (202°F; 94°C) 10.6%

Autoignition Temperature: 780°F (415°C)

FIRST AID: Move victim to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Wash skin with soap and water. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves.
