IDENTIFICATION:

CAS: 100-41-4

DOT ID: UN1175

Hazard Class or Division: 3 (FLAMMABLE LIQUID)

ERG Guide: 129

Formula: C8H10

RTECS No: DA0700000

Properties: Highly flammable liquid. Clear, colorless. Sweet, gasoline-like odor. Insoluble; floats on water. Flammable, irritating vapor is produced. Vapors are heavier than air; will collect in low areas. Uses: Solvent for surface coatings.

HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION

IARC: Group 2B, possible human carcinogen

• IDLH: 800 ppm/3526 mg/m3

• Odor threshold: 0.4–2.65 mg/m3

• OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant

• Vapor causes eye and respiratory tract irritation, corneal injury possible; dizziness, central nervous system depression. Exposure to high levels may result in drowsiness and loss of consciousness. Liquid is an eye and skin irritant. Causes smarting of the skin; blisters and first-degree burns on short exposure; second-degree burns on long exposure. Swallowing the liquid may aspirate into the lungs and cause chemical pneumonia. Long term exposure may cause dermatitis with skin rash, chronic irritation of eyes, nose, and throat. May cause brain and nervous system changes.

Exposure Limits:

• ACGIH TLV: 100 ppm TWA; 125 ppm STEL; BEI: 1.5 g[mandelic acid]/g creatinine in urine at end of shift at end of workweek; 2 ppm [ethyl benzene]in end-exhaled air prior to next shift

• OSHA PEL: 100 ppm/435 mg/m3 TWA

• NIOSH REL: 100 ppm/435 mg/m3 TWA; 125 ppm/545 mg/m3 STEL

• DFG MAK: 100 ppm/440 mg/m3; BAT: 1.5 mg/L [ethyl benzene]in blood end of expoure or end of shift; 2000 mg[mandelic acid plus phenyl glyoxylic acid]/g creatinine in urine at end of exposure or end of shift.

Respirator: 800 ppm: CCROV [any chemical cartridge without organic vapor cartridge(s)] GMFOV[any air-purifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted acid gas canister] PAPROV [any powered, airpurifying respirator with organic vapor cartridge(s)] SA (any supplied-air respirator) SCBAF (any selfcontained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece) Emergency or Planned Entry into Unknown Concentrations or IDLH Conditions SCBAF:PD,PP (any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA (any supplied-air respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positivepressure mode in combination with an auxiliary selfcontained breathing apparatus operated in a pressuredemand or other positive- pressure mode)

Escape: GMFOV (any air-purifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted organic vapor canister) SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, self-contained breathing apparatus). Note: Substance reported to cause eye irritation or damage; may require eye protection.

Reactivity: May accumulate static electrical charges and may cause ignition of its vapors. Forms explosive mixture with air. Incompatible with strong oxidizers and nitric acid. Causes rubber to swell and soften.

FIRE INFORMATION: Vapors may travel long distances to ignition sources and flash back. Vapors in confined areas or containers may explode in fire. If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream users of  potentially contaminated water.

Hazard Classifications:

Health Hazard (Blue) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2

Flammability (Red) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .   3

Reactivity (Yellow) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0

Flash Point: 59°F (15°C)

Flammable Limits in Air: LEL 0.8%; UEL 6.7%

Autoignition Temperature: 806°F (430°C)

FIRST AID: Move victim to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Wash skin with soap and water. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) to substance may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves.
