Solid
crystals or powder. White, gray, yellow, or green. Strong, acidic, irritating
odor like hydrochloric acid. Sinks in water and reacts forming toxic and corrosive
hydrogen chloride gas.

Aluminum production; flux in
aluminumsmelting.
HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION
• IDLH:
50
ppm as hydrogen chloride
• Odor threshold:
1–5 ppm; 0.256–10.1 ppm as hydrogen chloride
•
Vapor is corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Possible lung
edema; effects may be delayed. Liquid is a severe skin irritant; may cause pain
and second-degree thermal and acid burns after a few minutes contact. Long-term
exposure may affect the developing fetus. Estimated lethal dose is about 8 oz
for an average 150 lb adult
Exposure Limits:
ACGIH
TLV: 2 mg[Al]/m3 TWA

Note:
Substance
reported
to cause eye irritation or damage; may require eye protection.
Reactivity:
Contact
with air or water forms corrosive
hydrochloric
acid and toxic hydrogen chloride gas.
Reaction
with water may be violent. Water, alcohol,
and
alkenes cause polymerization. Incompatible with
nitrobenzene,
organic material, and bases. Attacks
metal
in presence of moisture.
FIRE INFORMATION:
May burn but does not readily ignite. Do not use water (forms
poisonous and corrosive fumes of hydrochloric acid.

FIRST AID:
ANHYDROUS:
Move victim to fresh air.
Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not
breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the
substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped
with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer
oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and
shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with
running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading
material on unaffected skin. Removal of solidified molten material from skin
requires medical assistance. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure
(inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact) to substance may be delayed.
