IDENTIFICATION:

CAS: 108-95-2

DOT ID: UN1671 (solid); UN2312 (molten); UN2821 (solution)

Hazard Class or Division: 6.1 (POISONOUS/TOXIC MATERIALS)

ERG Guide: 153

Formula: C6H6O

RTECS No: SJ3325000

Properties: Very flammable solid crystals or syrupy liquid solution. White solid that may redden on exposure to light and heat. Sweet, tarry, medicinal odor. May float or sink, and mixes slowly with water. Toxic gases of carbon monoxide produced in fire. Vapors are heavier than air; will collect in low areas.

HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION

• IDLH: 250 ppm/998 mg/m3

• IARC: Group 3, not classifiable as to carcinogenicity to human; inadequate animal and human evidence.

• Odor threshold: 0.24 mg/m3 Odor is not a reliable indicator of toxic amounts of vapor.

• OSHA Table Z-1 Air Contaminant

• NIOSH Criteria Document : NIOSH 76-196

• Chemical protective clothing is recommended because vapor and liquid can be dermally absorbed and may contribute to systemic toxicity. The solid or vapor are corrosive to the eyes, skin, and the respiratory tract. Skin and eye contact causes severe burns and blindness. Inhalation of vapor may cause lung edema; the effects may be delayed. May affect  the central nervous system, heart and kidneys, resulting in convulsions, coma, cardiac disorders, respiratory failure, collapse. Exposure may result in death. Swallowing the material or inhaling the vapors can cause death. Chronic contact with skin may cause dermatitis. Chronic exposure may affect the liver and kidneys. Repeated phenol exposure in the workplace has caused renal damage including kidney inflammation, swelling in the kidney tubules and cells, and degenerative changes in glomeruli. Liver  damage and pigment changes of the sin have been noted in some workers. Chronic exposure has been correlated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease and insufficient blood supply to the heart in workers. Prolonged exposure by any route to levels above the standard may cause difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, fainting, mental disturbances, dark coloration of urine, and skin rash. Phenol has been reported to embryotoxic and fetotoxic, but may not be teratogenic.

Exposure Limits:

• ACGIH TLV: 5 ppm/19 mg/m3 TWA (skin), not classifiable as a human carcinogen; BEI: 250 mg[total pheno]/g in creatinineurine, end of shift.

• OSHA PEL: 5 ppm/19 mg/m3 TWA (skin)

• NIOSH REL: 5 ppm/19 mg/m3 TWA (skin); 15.6 ppm/60 mg/m3/15 min. ceiling limit

• DFG BAT: 300 mg[phenol]/L in urine, at end of shift (skin)

Respirator: 50 ppm: CCROVDM (any chemical cartridge respirator with organic vapor cartridge(s) in combination with a dust and mist filter); SA (any supplied-air respirator). 125 ppm: SA:CF (any supplied-air respirator operated in a  continuous-flow mode) PAPROVDM (any powered, air-purifying respirator with organic vapor cartridge(s) in combination with a dust and mist filter). 250 ppm: CCRFOVHiE [any chemical cartridge respirator with a full facepiece and organic vapor cartridge(s) in combination with a high efficiency particulate filter] GMFOVHiE [any air-purifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or backmounted  organic vapor canister having a  highefficiency particulate filter] PAPRTOVHiE [any powered, air-purifying respirator with a tight-fitting facepiece and organic vapor cartridge(s) in combination with a high-efficiency particulate filter] SCBAF (any self-contained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece) SAF (any supplied-air respirator with a full facepiece). Emergency or Planned Entry into Unknown Concentrations or IDLH Conditions SCBAF:PD,PP (any self-contained breathing  apparatus that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressuredemand or other positive-pressure mode) SAF:PD,PP:ASCBA (any supplied-air respirator that has a full facepiece and is operated in a pressuredemand or other  positive-pressure mode in combination with an auxiliary self-contained breathing apparatus operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode).

Escape: GMFOVHiE [any air-purifying, full-facepiece respirator (gas mask) with a chin-style, front- or back-mounted organic vapor canister having a high-efficiency particulate filter] SCBAE (any appropriate escape-type, self-contained breathing apparatus).

Reactivity: Forms explosive mixture with air. Can react violently with butadiene and mixtures of aluminum chloride and nitrobenzene. Vigorous reaction with strong oxidizers such as permanganates or chlorine. Incompatible with acids, aluminum chloride, caustics, aliphatic amines, amides, oxidizers, formaldehyde, and calcium hypochlorite. Liquid attacks some plastics, rubber and coatings; hot liquid attacks aluminum, magnesium, lead and zinc metals.

FIRE INFORMATION: Fire fighting gear, including SCBA, does not provide adequate protection. If exposure occurs, remove and isolate gear immediately  and thoroughly decontaminate personnel. Vapors in confined areas or  containers may explode in fire. If material or contaminated runoff enters waterways, notify downstream users of potentially contaminated water.

Hazard Classifications:

Health Hazard (Blue) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3

Flammability (Red) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .   2

Reactivity (Yellow) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0

Flash Point: 185°F (85°C) (oc); 175°F (79°C) (cc)

Flammable Limits in Air: LEL 1.7%; UEL 8.6%

Autoignition Temperature: 1319°F (715°C)

FIRST AID: Move victim to fresh air. Call emergency medical care. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Keep victim warm and quiet. Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion or skin contact) may be delayed. Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves.
